Opera York has partnered with the York Region Public and Separate School Boards to introduce opera to a new
generation through the Opera for Schools/L'opéra pour les écoles
program. Opera for Schools/L'opéra pour les écoles
is a curriculum based program that offers educators
everything they need to teach students a love of Opera. The
program is offered in both English and French languages to elementary
and secondary school students in York Region and Toronto. Opera for Schools has reached close to 10,000 students since it's
beginning.
Participation in the program is very affordable ($9.00 per student) and
includes:
- A visit to the theatre for a
live operatic concert performed by some of the stars of Opera York.
The performance consists of arias from the world's best loved
operas. The concert is designed to introduce, in a highly
entertaining and participatory way, the basic components of opera
including: the different vocal ranges, types of opera and ways of
singing. The performance is followed by a question and answer
period where students can ask the performers their own questions

- A complete curriculum based
"Teacher Student Learning Guide" with companion CD of
"Great Canadian Performances" produced by CBC Audio for
Opera York. This specially designed teaching unit, authored by David
Geene, (B.Mus.,H. Ed., B.Ed.) and Laurie L. Rossi, (B.Mus.,H.Ed.,B.Ed.)
has been translated by for the french program L'opéra pour les écoles
by Vivian Garofalo and Yvonne Dufault. The guide contains
classroom strategies, strengthening understanding of music
components, literacy activities using student reflection and
communication, a music assessment rubric template and black line
reproducible masters.
